THE INQUISITOR'S MARK by Dianne Salerni

The Inquisitor's Mark (Eighth Day, #2)

My good friend Dianne Salerni's new book, THE INQUISITOR'S MARK was released yesterday. I'm so excited for her! I'm really looking forward to reading it!! It's book 2 in THE EIGHTH DAY series.

Check it out!

Dipping my toe in the water.

So I'm trying to get back on a blogging schedule. I might go for once a week. Friday perhaps. I don't know, we'll see. I think I needed a break to find out how to balance things. I'm getting there. I don't thing you fully balance anything. It's a cycle of what you can deal with and how you can change.

As you can see, I'm sprucing up the old blog. This process will be slow, but I'm cleaning it up and getting it back in order. I think holding myself to a post once a week will get some of my practice back in. I feel a little rusty but that's okay. Some say blogging is dead, but I found the motion of blogging something little like a journal entry can't hurt the old writing wheels.

I also slowed down so I could read more. I'm a slow reader just like I'm a slow writer, but I'm beginning to fit it in here and there so I'm confident I'm going to make it work.

Right now, I'm reading RUIN AND RISING by Leigh Bardugo. I like it. This is the last book in Grisha Trilogy. I'm anxious to see how it all ends.

It's a part of a writer's life to read. To me the books are a teacher. I'm always trying to see how the author accomplished what they set out to do and if it worked.

I'll also post about different blogs or sites you can go to that will strengthen your writing. Currently, I have a piece up for critique at Dianne Salerni's and Marcy Hatch's Mainewords blog. It's called First Impressions. Every month they critique the first page of a writer's work. It's extremely helpful. Check it out if you haven't done so already. I think this is the third time I'm participating.

That's it for today.

What are you reading?

What are your favorite ways to strengthen your craft?

Have a great day!

A book to check out.

Wow. I've been gone a while. Sorry. Between real life, writing, brainstorming, revising and querying, some things have slipped through the cracks. My next posts will be about up and coming books that you may want to should check out. :)

Today, I have THE EIGHTH DAY by Dianne K. Salerni. I've known Dianne for years and she is not only an amazing author but an incredible person. I can't thank her enough for all the advice she has given me. The cover of her new book, well first book in her new series, was released recently and it's really cool. I am so excited for the release and for Dianne. THE EIGHTH DAY will be born to the world summer 2014. So mark it on your calendars people.

Title: THE EIGHTH DAY
Author: Dianne K. Salerni
Publisher: HarperCollins
Release date: Summer 2014
MG Fantasy

Blurb:
When newly orphaned Jax Aubrey awakes to a world without people the day after his thirteenth birthday, he thinks it’s the apocalypse. But then the next day is a regular old Thursday. Has Jax gone crazy? What’s going on?

Riley Pendare, Jax’s sort of clueless eighteen-year-old guardian, breaks the news: Jax just experienced the Eighth Day, an extra twenty-four-hour period between Wednesday and Thursday. Some people, like Jax and Riley, have the ability to live in all eight days. But others, like Evangeline, the teenage girl who’s been hiding in the house next door for years, exist only on this special day.

At first it’s awesome to have a secret day. But as Jax gets to know the very guarded Evangeline, he discovers that she is the sought-after key to an ancient spell rooted in Arthurian legend. And Riley—who forgets to pay bills and buy groceries!—is sworn to keep her safe from those who want to use her to eliminate the seven-day world and all who live there.

Jax tries to protect Evangeline, but with his new friend’s life on the line, as well as the threat of human destruction, he is faced with an impossible choice: trigger a real apocalypse or sacrifice Evangeline.

With a whole extra day to figure things out, it couldn’t be too hard . . . right?

Check out THE EIGHTH DAY summer of 2014. Can't wait!! You go, Dianne!!

Have a great day!!

It's Friday . . .

Yep, it's Friday, and it's been raining on and off for days. It certainly doesn't help in my productivity department. Weather affects my mood. Anyway, I'm in limbo. It's that time in a writer's life where I finished a manuscript and it's out to betas for round one and I don't know what to do next. I wrote a query, which my computer lost (long story), then I wrote another one that I'm not super psyched about. It's the ho hum time. I want to write something new, but can't get into it and then I want to revise something old, but can't get into it. We all go through it. I'm anxious and annoyed. I need something to occupy this urge, this want. Drives me crazy, but it happens. It's part of the whole cycle. I'm reading a book, but I'm not fully feelin' it. You get the picture.

Anywho, a couple of things are going on.

1. Check out my beginnings links on YaLitChat in the Craft Masters group. Later in the month, the lovely Dianne Salerni gives her advice on writing the first chapter.

2. Write Club is up and open for submissions. It's a fun way to put a piece out there and get advice without anyone knowing who you are. D L Hammons is a wonderful host.

So what's new with you?

Are you in limbo too? How do you get writing again?

Have a great day!!

Wordy Wednesday

Well, today things are totally random hence the crazy title. I'm catching up and reporting what's happening. Sort of like fun facts Friday, but it's on Wednesday.

1. I finished my revision. Yes, I'm pumped. Now onto edits, then betas. Yikes. I know this process, but no matter how many times I do it, I still get nervous.

2. THE CAGED GRAVES by Dianne Salerni is out. Go check it out and get your copy. Congrats again, Dianne! I attended the signing last night, which was awesome! I can't wait to read it. Dianne is an amazing and talented lady.
The Caged Graves

Blurb (per Barnes and Noble .com):
The year is 1867, and seventeen-year-old Verity Boone is excited to return from Worcester, Massachusetts, to Catawissa, Pennsylvania, the hometown she left when she was just a baby. Now she will finally meet the fiancĂ© she knows only through letters! Soon, however, she discovers two strangely caged graves . . . and learns that one of them is her own mother’s. Verity swears she’ll get to the bottom of why her mother was buried in “unhallowed ground” in this suspenseful teen mystery that swirls with rumors of witchcraft, buried gold from the days of the War of Independence, and even more shocking family secrets.

3. Go and congratulate E.C Myers. FAIR COIN has won the Andre Norton Award. You go, Eugene!Congrats! I'm so excited for him. He is a very talented and awesome guy! So, go, and throw confetti.

Blurb (per amazon.com):
The coin changed Ephraim's life. But how can he change it back?

Sixteen-year-old Ephraim Scott is horrified when he comes home from school and finds his mother unconscious at the kitchen table, clutching a bottle of pills. The reason for her suicide attempt is even more disturbing: she thought she'd identified Ephraim's body at the hospital that day.

Among his dead double's belongings, Ephraim finds a strange coin--a coin that grants wishes when he flips it. With a flick of his thumb, he can turn his alcoholic mother into a model parent and catch the eye of the girl he's liked since second grade. But the coin doesn't always change things for the better. And a bad flip can destroy other people's lives as easily as it rebuilds his own.

The coin could give Ephraim everything he's ever wanted--if he learns to control its power before his luck runs out.

4. I'm the new moderator for the Craft Masters Group on YaLitChat. Come on over and say hello and let me know what topics you would like to see covered.

What's new with you?

Have a great day!

Random things

It's Monday and rainy here so it makes me sleepy, but I have some things to share.

-Dianne Salerni's new release, THE CAGED GRAVES, will be out this month (May 14, 2013). Keep an eye out, it looks and sounds awesome.
Pretty, pretty cover.
-Yes, I'm still revising like crazy. Music is still creating visions of my characters, which I love. I've mentioned this several times. This week I've been really listening to the new Depeche Mode release. Yes, that synth pop band from the 80s. They have been producing music all these years, and they are one of my favorites. Here's the song that will be added to my latest WiP's playlist. It will sit beside Silversun Pickups. Total love.

-I'm feeling more comfortable with my writing process and doing things my way, which feels great and helps with the flow of things.

-I am scared to finish my latest revision because that means I'm closer to handing it to betas and it scares me cause, well, you know. Yes, I still get all nervy inside letting anyone read my stuff, but I know it will only help me improve.

See totally random. Plus, it's Monday and I'm sleepy.

What's new with you?

Any new books you are excited about?

Have a great day!!

Stumped on gifts?

The holidays are upon us, well, they have been upon us since September, but now it's crunch time. Here are some things that I have spotted for someone you may know, ya know, someone who is in the writing world. Let's face it, we are a different breed of human.
So, need a gift idea for a writer. Here are some ideas and things that I've seen that might suit your needs.

1. T-shirt. I find this one fantastic. Here's the link to purchase.
CAREFUL OR YOU'LL END UP IN MY NOVEL SHIRT

2. Books on the craft. Writers are always learning. Save the Cat by Blake Snyder is the book everyone talks about.

3. If you know a writer with small children, maybe offer a time to watch their kids so they can write.

4. Of course, gift cards to a bookstore are always accepted.

5. Know of a writing course a writer person might be interested in? A favorite place they like to go and learn? On the web or local. Gift card, people. If you are local to the Philly area, Musehouse Center for the Literary Arts provides writing courses. Online, check out Marie Lawson's Writing Academy.

6. I just listened in on a wonderful webinar by K.M. Walton on Writing for Children Live. You can purchase gift card and past webinars. Check it out here.

7. Bookmarks. A writer always likes to make a statement when reading.

8. Journals. A writer likes to make a statement while jotting down the best idea ever.

9. Cool mugs that can hold that caffeinated beverage the writer so desperately needs when they are up at 3 a.m. listening to their characters. Want this on your mug. Go to Zazzle to purchase.

10. Chocolate. Best Chocolate in America is from West Chester. Eclat Chocolate, and yes, it's to die for.

Well, there you have it.
Do you have any ideas for writer gifts?

Today, my first page is on Dianne Salerni's and Marcy Hatch's blogs. They both are wonderful and nice. I will admit, I'm scared, so go and give me your thoughts.

Have a great day!

Fun Facts Friday

Another crazy week and I'm liking the warmer weather minus the thunderstorms at night (mother nature are you listening). On with the facts:

1. I'm being critiqued at Dianne Salerni's blog and Marcy Hatch's blog today. Thank you ladies!!Please check it out and rip it apart give me some feedback. Disclaimer: It's a first draft. *reaches for chocolate*
That's me testing the waters with my new MS.

2. My favorite summer activity is going to the beach. The smell of the salt air mixed with greasy food makes my mind wander and dream so I'll probably have more ideas.

3. Check out Karen Akins blog. Go congratulate her, she has a book deal!! Congrats Karen!

4. Mark your calenders for WriteOnCon (if you haven't already). It's always full of great info and opportunity.

5. Elana Johnson will be guest posting, right here, on June 15th. Her book SURRENDER will be out next Tuesday, June, 5th.

6. Tip: Don't try and write after an eye doctor appointment. Why? If you get pupil dilation drops, yeah, it makes reading blurry. Not good. It amazes me that they let you drive after that.

Any news?

What are your plans for summer?

What is your favorite thing to do in the summer time? (Minus writing, that's a given).

Have a great weekend!!

Fun Facts Friday.

Another week, another Friday. On with the facts.

1. I'm excited for my new project and am in the "I love you" phase. Yeah, I know it's only a matter of time till it's the "I need a break from you" phase.

2. I got to meet Beth Kephart (YOU ARE MY ONLY), E.C. Myers (FAIR COIN), and Elisa Ludwig (PRETTY CROOKED) this week. They were signing at an Educators Appreciation event at the Barnes and Noble in Exton. They were there with K. M. Walton (CRACKED), Dianne Salerni (WE HEAR THE DEAD), and Amy Garvey (COLD KISS). Wonderful folks. Now go check out their sites and their books. Let me give you a hint--all of them are awesome. Oh, I can't forget the two lovely authors with adorable picture books--Monica Carnesi (LITTLE DOG LOST) and Ame Dyckman (BOY + BOT). Yes, full of awesome!

3. The Simon Larter has a story published in the Space Battles: Full Throttle Space Tales #6. Go check it out.

3. Trying to figure out your style--go check out this post from QueryTracker.net.

4. Need inspiration--Check out this post from Writes by Moonlight.

5. A couple of more posts I need to share. I don't usually find this many, but hey, it's been that kind of week.

A post by the lovely Stina Lindenblatt on Subtext.

How to deal with patience on the road to publication from Novel Rocket.

What to look for in your final edits from Nail Your Novel.

6. I've also added to my book collection, Edgar Allen Poe--Complete Tales and Poems. I have hearts dancing all around when I look at it, and they're not in the floorboards.

Do you have any fun facts to share?

Have a great weekend!

Test the waters

Getting critiqued can be scary. The idea of someone reading what you (heart and soul) wrote may give you  nightmares of blood red ink scratched across each page with comments of how to fix this and that, along with what you need to learn in the margins. Embarrassment, hurt, saddness can take hold and a tear may fall. You open your eyes. It was a nightmare. A big sense of relief, but at some point, you have to share your work. Why? To grow. To strengthen. You need to know what is wrong to fix it.

For some, it's easy. For others, not so much. For me, I wanted lots of people to read my stuff and tell me what I needed to do. It doesn't mean I wasn't chewing my nails or eating a load of chocolate everytime I sent it, or I didn't fall hard when I got some of them back. I did and I still do. You learn how to deal and tolerate it in some way. But I realized the only way for me to learn is to 'see' what I'm doing wrong.

Where do you start? There are many places to begin.

1. Ask a fellow blogger or writer you trust. It's a start. Send something small if you want to test the waters.

2. If you are feeling brave try one of these ultra helpful sites. Both take only small snippits of your work and give some great feedback. Plus, you can remain anonymous. Easy peasy.

Christina Lee and Stina Lindenblatt's First Words Workshop

Dianne Salerni and Marcy's (Mainwords) First Impressions

3. If you're really brave try something more. There are forums where you can load more of your work for feedback.

YALitChat-For young adult

Figment

Authonomy

Miss Snarks's First Victim

It's not easy. No one said it was. Testing the waters is just another step in becoming a better writer.

Have you tested the waters?

If you want to share any other tips or sites, please share in the comments below.
Have a great day!

CRACKED launch party!!

I've got a few (maybe a little more) photos from the CRACKED launch party. Of course it was awesome. Kate is the most down to earth and optimistic gal I know. She's an inspiration and an amazing author (if you don't have the book already, go get it).

First, I stink at photos of people. I really do. I'm better with photos of inanimate objects (think buildings). So sorry. I'm also a blabber mouth so I wind up talking over taking photos.
Second, this was so much fun. Chester County Books and Music was packed (I think 300 folks showed up) to see Kate speak and sign. It was great to see so many familiar faces.

Some local authors that attended: A.S. King, Beth Kephart, Amy Garvey, Amy Holder, Dianne Salerni.

Of course, the PLN folks were there. Frankie Diane Mallis, Simon Larter, Jessica Corra, Donna Gamble, Sara De Sabato, Paul Joseph, Kelly Lyman, Ilene Wong, Kevin Sheridan, Lillie, Jenna, Shveta Thakrar, K. A. Magrowski, Joanne Fritz. I hope I didn't forget anyone. (If I don't have your link, please let me know and I'll add it.)

On with the photos:

How cool is that cake?

The crowd.

The scene: Joanne Fritz starting off the night. Kate even had favors. See the bags on the table.

Big smiles from K. M. Walton.

Frankie, Jenna, Simon (partially hidden) and Kelly

Frankie taking a picture of me, taking a picture of her, and Jenna.

Kelly taking a picture of me and Amy Garvey

Frankie has way more pictures and an interesting vlog, so go check it out. Also check out the other folks' links (above) for more photos and interesting posts.

Don't forget, I'm giving away a signed copy of CRACKED. Go here to enter.

Have a great day!

Made it through and PAYA

Well, I made it through the hurricane. We lost power, but only for a short time. I did get a chance to attend PAYA right before the storm hit. What fun. An awesome festival celebrating Young adult books. Author signings, raffles, lots of fun. It's held in West Chester, Pa. Some authors couldn't make it due to the storm. I was bummed because Jeri Smith-Ready was one of them. :( I will meet her one day. I'd rather them be safe, though.
I also have to become more camera happy at these things. I feel like such a stalker. I did take a few of pics.

We had lots of laughs and writing talk. Frankie took video. I'm not sure when that's going to be posted. *cringes* I will keep you posted.

How was your weekend?

Any goals?

I'm just glad I'm starting to get a schedule in place. I hope to revise a lot this week.
Have a great day!

The Weekend.

Well, Saturday was a fun day for me. My car battery was replaced, the hubs sent me flowers and I went to the PAYA festival in my town. It was way cool. I hope they plan to do this again next year. I didn't get a chance to make it to the critique sessions in the morning but I heard they were great.

I did buy books which I am now admitting to myself that I have a wicked book addiction, but it was for a good cause. I have to say, I was a little nervous to go. I did get the shakes and my hands got a little sweaty. I've never met a published author face to face before and I wasn't sure of the proper etiquette on getting a book signed. What do I say? How do I approach? But once I got there, everyone was extremely friendly and welcoming.

I got to meet these lovely ladies/fabulous authors--Dianne K. Salerni, Cyn Balog, Jennifer Murgia, and Shelena Shorts. Here is a list of who was there. PAYA website.

There were great prizes too. Yes, I bought chances and I won a book with all the goodies to go along with it.
Much fun was had and like I said I hope they do it again next year.

So, I must mention some more contests that are running. There are so many. Lots of goodies.

Carol from Carolina's Prints-- The gal who rocks and has an array of amazing ARCs,that may make my head explode. Ends September 6th. Tell her I sent you.

New Blogger buddy-- Amie Borst is having a contest. Some of the books she is giving away are by authors I was lucky enough to meet at PAYA. Ends August 31st.

I can't remember if I mentioned this before--Christine H is having a 100 follower contest. Ends August 27th and a Rainy Day Blogfest on August 25th. Go Christine.

I'm thinking of starting Writing the Next Line again. I plan to post it September 3rd. So be here. :)Thank you to everyone who commented on my entry for the fun blogfest last week.

My writing schedule is going well. I have been following it the best I can. It's funny, I'm a happier person when I can accomplish some good writing time.

How do you feel after some good writing time?

How was your weekend?

Have a great day!
